Blow-drying gets blamed for a lot of damage it does not cause. The dryer is rarely the problem — the technique is. Wet hair handled roughly, heat held too close, and drying from soaking wet all do far more harm than the appliance itself.

Why Wet Hair Is So Vulnerable

Step One: Get the Water Out Properly

  • Squeeze, never rub. Press sections between your palms.

  • Blot for 30–60 seconds; do not wrap tightly for long periods.
  • Aim to reach roughly 70–80% dry before any heat touches the hair. This one change removes most heat damage.

Step Two: Prep Before the Heat

  • Apply heat protectant to damp hair, mid-lengths and ends first. It raises the temperature at which keratin starts to denature and reduces moisture loss.
  • Add a light leave-in or serum for smoothing.

Technique by Hair Type

Fine Hair

Low to medium heat, high airflow. Lift at the roots with your fingers or a round brush and direct air at the root area first. Over-drying flattens fine hair; stop while it still feels barely cool.

Thick or Coarse Hair

Section generously — six or more clips. Rough-dry to 80% before brushwork, or you will hold heat on the same section for far too long. Medium-high heat with a strong motor.

Curly and Coily Hair

Use a diffuser on low heat and low speed. Cup sections, hold still, and do not disturb the curl pattern. Never comb through while drying. Air-drying to 60–70% before diffusing gives the best definition and the least frizz.

Color-Treated or Bleached Hair

Lower heat, more prep, and a bond-building or protein treatment weekly. Lightened hair is more porous, absorbs heat faster and dries faster than you expect.
